The first full week in the NC House of Representatives has confirmed two great lessons that I was warned about by Representative Bonner Stiller as he departed. One, look for the motivation behind a bill and follow the money.   Second, the title of a bill may not tell what's in the bill.  Two controversial bills that passed the House last week prove the truth behind these statements.   First, Senate Bill 526, the School Violence Prevention Act or the "bullying bill" will not only not prevent violence or reduce bullying, it may increase it.  This legislation creates special classes of victims, contains no punishment for bullies, and opens up teachers, administrators, and school boards to more lawsuits.  An alternative bill offered by the minority party would have reduced all bullying and an amendment would have provided punishment for bullies, but both were voted down by most of the majority party.  This law, if signed by the Governor,...

2009 State Games of North Carolina Opening Ceremonies set for Friday, June 19     (6/15/2009)

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – The opening ceremonies for the 2009 State Games of North Carolina are set for Friday, June 19 at the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte. North Brunswick Chamber of Commerce elects new officers, board members     (6/2/2009)

LELAND, N.C. – The North Brunswick Chamber of Commerce recently elected new officers and six new board members, all of whom will take office July 1.  The officers were elected by the Board of Directors at its June 1 meeting, while the new board members were elected in May by the Chamber’s general membership.  Five of the new board members were elected to three-year terms, and the sixth was elected to an unexpired two-year term. Rep. Bonner Stiller to resign effective June 15, Star News reports     (6/2/2009)
The Wilmington Star-News is reporting that State Representative Bonner Stiller, a Brunswick County Republican, will resign his seat effective June 15.  According to the article as well as other sources, 7th District Chairman Frank Iler is the likely frontrunner for the seat.  Iler, who lives in Oak Island, is immediate past chairman of the Brunswick County GOP.  Brunswick County GOP executive committee members who live in the district will vote on a replacement, who must then be approved by Gov. Brunswick County entrepreneurs invited to participate in BCC study     (5/4/2009)
BOLIVIA, NC — Brunswick Community College’s Small Business Center is conducting a study on entrepreneurship in Brunswick County. As part of this study, the center plans to meet with entrepreneurs to understand their businesses and the overall climate in the area so that the community can better serve the small business owner. No financial information will be asked and the business owner will remain anonymous. The responses will be published as an aggregate report to help community agencies develop strategies based on the information obtained through the interviews.  Entrepreneurs who participate will be provided with a copy of the results.
